Star Ushak Fragment 5.8 x 6.4

Star Ushak carpets were first woven at the end of the 15th century and remained popular until about 1600. They appear in European paintings of the period, e.g., portraits of King Henry VIII from before 1540, when presumably they were in new condition.

This example has all the classic features of the type: glory “Turkey Red” field, eight-pointed stars in dark blue with yellow outlines and arabesques, a background pattern of green vines and leaves, and a light blue main border. The rug was originally about thirteen feet in length and has been shortened, probably in the early 20th century. The design has influenced European carpets beginning in the 16th century and it appears even in 19th century. Orientalist paintings are an indicator of luxury and exoticism. The pattern came into existence seeming full-blown and it disappeared just as suddenly. As it generally the case with Ushak weaving, it has a wool warp, red wool wefts and medium fine symmetric knots. The elegant properties and spacing indicate a piece from the best period of Ushak weaving.
