Sultanabad Rugs

The History Of Antique Sultanabad Rugs

Sultanabad rugs are one of the most famous varieties of rugs to hail from the Arak region of Iran.  The city of Sultanabad was constructed during the period of 1700-1850.  The area quickly became known for the production of high-quality hand-stitched rugs, and Sultanabad rugs in particular were and are well-loved for their supreme design and beauty.

In the late 1800’s a foreign export firm established rug-making shops in the Sultanabad area and began producing and exporting rugs to Europe and the Western World.  As excitement over these rugs began to grow, old rug patterns from the 1500’s were revamped to appeal to a European and Western audience.  This new style of Sultanabad rug was quickly hailed as one of the most loved and best appreciated works of art available.

As excitement over Sultanabad continued to grow in the late 1800’s, the export firm Zeigler and Co. continued production of high-quality Sultanabad rugs and even began custom making rugs for the rich and wealthy individuals of Europe.  Among these individuals were the famous beer-brewing family, the Guinness’s.

Today, antique Sultanabad rugs are still enjoyed the entire world over.  Coveted for their beauty, their far superior quality, and the elegance they add to any home where they are placed, antique Sultanabad rugs are among the finest rugs available anywhere in the world.  If you have bare floors in need of some decorative attention, there’s no better attention you can pay to any floor than by adorning it with a beautiful antique Sultanabad rug.  Suppose you are re-decorating entire living room, then select the first and purchase the furniture, which blends in nicely with rugs colors & designs.

Colours & Styles

Rugs featured originally bold and floral designs and were patterned and spacious exquisitely. Now, the wide variety of the sizes are accessible to suit your needs and importantly, to suit décor of the apartment. In olden days, the rugs were been crafted from the wool, actually wool came from sheep that belonged to weaver himself. Rugs are woven, making use of the asymmetrical Turkish knots for tying each loop.

Aside from making use of wide & bold borders, designs feature the small and repeating motifs that are delicately and intricately crafted. Usually, these patterns are of floral and all over, big scale lattice vine patterns. The Sultanabad merchants & weavers went on simplifying these designs for making them subdued, thus, foreign companies & locals adopted the similar style & system and making Sultanabad carpets popular. The carpets have highest decorative value.

One may also attribute popularity as well as emergence of Sultanabad rug to British company, Ziegler & Co, that at 1883, established the workshop for making the Persian carpets in an area of Sultanabad Iran. And this workshop was located at Arak & Ziegler and Co had employ designers from the western department shops to modify the carpets, to appeal to the Western tastes. From then, there was no seeing back for hugely famous rugs.
